Lifestyles-ALS SUPPORT:
A support group has been organized for northern Wisconsin residents who have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.
ALS is a progressive, irreversible disease of the nervous system. ALS kills nerve cells in the spine and nerves running to muscles, which weaken and waste away as the disease progresses. There is no known cause or cure.
Northwestern Wisconsin ALS Support Group is affiliated with the national ALS Association.
Lew Neff of Chippewa Falls, who has ALS, said he is aware of six other people in the Eau Claire area who have ALS as well as others in Marshfield, Ladysmith and Durand.
The group meets the first Sunday of every month. The next meeting will be at 2:30 p.m. April 5 at Chippewa Valley Bible Church, 531 E. South Ave., Chippewa Falls. The building is handicapped accessible.
Sally Krohn of Chippewa Falls, one of the organizers of the group, encouraged those with ALS to contact her, even if they cannot attend meetings. Krohn may be reached at 709 Irvine St., Chippewa Falls, WI 54729, phone 723-1694.
